Self-regulation skills can be conceived as a set of self-management activities and strategies that identify and cultivate one’s innate ability to achieve a desired level of health and wellness. Over the last several years, as research and technology in this area have improved, there has been considerable interest in and support for the concept of HRV as a marker for, or a predictor of, health outcomes. It is suggested that decreased HRV is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, while rhythmic HRV is desirable and may create and reflect a more optimal state of health. They also directly affect how we feel. Positive emotions not only feel better subjectively, but tend to increase synchronisation of the body’s systems, thereby enhancing energy and enabling us to function with greater efficiency and effectiveness. Our changing heart rhythms affect not only the heart but also the brain’s ability to process information, including decision-making, problem-solving and creativity. An optimal level of variability is critical to the inherent flexibility and adaptability that express healthy function.īeat-to-beat changes are influenced by emotions, thoughts and physical exercise. It has become apparent that while a large degree of instability is detrimental to efficient physiological functioning, too little variation can also be pathological. HRV analysis suggests that the heart is a sensitive marker for emotional changes, as reflected in heart rhythm patterns. This is an important indicator of both physiological resilience and behavioural flexibility, reflecting a person’s capacity to adapt effectively to stress and environmental demands. HRV is a measure of the beat-to-beat changes in heart rate. Heartbeats are not simply a mechanical rhythm, but an intelligent language to which our entire body responds. The intelligence of the heart reveals itself in its optimal condition in a state defined as cardiac coherence, which is measured by monitoring Heart Rate Variability (HRV). The heart represents the interface between our emotional states and their equivalent physiological responses. There are at least 40 thousands neurons in the heart communicating with different areas of the brain, including the amygdala, thalamus and cortex. In the last twenty years researchers have been exploring, and revealing, the powerful wisdom in our hearts.
